Since you have problems with the usually working SMTP-after-POP, try
SMTP-Auth. http://hilfe.web.de/freemail/Hilfe/Inhalt/Optionen/#11 reads:

Current version of sendmail should support SMTP Authentication. In order
to configure this
http://support.real-time.com/linux/email/server/sendmail.html might be
helpful.
